Penne with Italian Sausage and Creamy Tomato Sauce

We have been so fortunate to have a great traditional Butcher shop so near our house. I can actually walk from our house to their store. How convenient is that! Sadly, they will soon be moving to another town and we will miss them terribly. Thankfully though, we often visit this town and so we can continue to get our favorite meat combos from their shop and still enjoy cooking with them. We just need to buy in bulk and have our cooler ready for the long haul. :-)

I guess the reason why we love this super simple pasta recipe is truly because of the good quality of Italian Sausage that we get from their store. That is the key here - get a good quality Italian Sausage whether from the butcher's shop or from your local grocery. If you do so, like us, this will become a family staple in your household. We have been making this pasta almost on a weekly basis.

I have done this many years ago but for some reason, when we moved to our new house, I have forgotten about this recipe. Thankfully, since we get Italian Sausages on a regular basis and one day I ran out of ideas on how to use them (or was probably to lazy to think of one....) it dawned on me that I should try this recipe once again. Needless to say the entire family, especially my hubby, were all very pleased.

Enjoy this quick and flavorful Pasta with  Italian Sausage and creamy tomato Sauce!

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons, Olive Oil
1 lb. Italian Sausages (Spicy or Regular)
1 lb. Plum Tomatoes, diced
2 teaspoons, dried Italian Seasoning
1/2 cup Heavy (Double) Cream (add some more, if needed)
A pinch or 2 of Red Chili flakes*
Salt and Pepper, to taste
12 oz. Penne (or Spaghetti or your favorite Pasta)
Fresh parsley, chopped to garnish
Parmesan cheese, to pass around

*Add only if you are using regular Italian Sausages and not the Spicy one to give the pasta sauce a little spicy kick!

Procedure

Boil enough water to cook the pasta. Season the water with salt. Cook the pasta in salted water until al dente. As you are waiting for the water to boil begin cooking the sauce.

Heat the Olive oil over medium-low heat just until warmed up. Add the sausages and sauté them in oil breaking them apart as you do so with a fork to loosen the meat and prevent them from clumping. Cook until the sausages change color or turn brown.

Stir in the diced tomatoes and dried Italian seasoning.  Raise the heat a little and cook uncovered until the tomatoes have softened about 7-10 minutes. Add the red chili flakes at this point, if using.

Pour in the cream. Gently stir it in and allow to simmer until fully heated through, roughly 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, if desired.

Drain the pasta when done. Add to the sauce and toss until fully coated. Garnish with some chopped fresh Parsley for extra flavor and color. Serve immediately with some freshly grated Parmesan Cheese! Delish!!!

  1. Hello!

I love Pasta and I just wanted to ask, is the Italian seasoning a Must? Or could I substitute it with something else??

Thanks! And more gastronomical delights please!

    1. It does add a lot of flavor but if you must substitute then try either dried parsley or thyme. Hope that helps and thanks for stopping by Micole. :-)
