Fig, Prosciutto and Arugula Sandwich Wrap

Fresh figs from California were on sale the other day so I grabbed myself a box. It's unbelievable but it was my first time to actually taste fresh figs. Oh, it was so sweet and delicious! How could I not have tried this before?  Actually, it's because I've never really noticed fresh figs being sold much in the grocery where we lived previously. Perhaps, I didn't look hard enough and that could be true or perhaps I usually just found the dried ones. Since we don't have these in the Philippines, I am truly not very familiar with it and have never used them for anything.

I thought it's high time to get acquainted with this delicious and beautiful fruit which somewhat reminded me of the Asian dragon fruit because of their spotty interior. Ok, so the dragon fruit does not look like fig at all though I find the texture to be somewhat similar. Anyway, that was what I was reminded of.

I have tasted a crepe filled with fig spread, prosciutto, goat cheese and arugula before and I just loved it. This delicious crepe was at once sweet, cheesy, salty and truly so yum! I thought I'd turn it into a wrap as I didn't want to go to the trouble of making a crepe - so lazy, aren't I? I told hubby I was making this and he loved the idea but said no way to goat cheese and suggested mascarpone instead. I wasn't sure the latter would work as I often associate this cheese with dessert and not really for a sandwich but I didn't want to end up eating all the wraps all by myself if I used the goat cheese so I compromised in the end and used mascarpone instead. I am happy to report that it worked pretty well, too and complemented the rest of the ingredients. Since I used fresh figs already I tried pairing it with another jam (and not fig spread) and the only one remaining in our fridge was some cherry preserve so that's the one that went into the wrap as well. And again, it worked pretty well. That's what's so great about this sandwich - you can tweak it to your liking. I brought these to a Labor Day picnic and they were really enjoyed a lot so I am sure you would love these little bites, too!

Anyway, it's pretty easy to make and almost needed no recipe but I listed the ingredients and procedure down below for convenience but here are some photos for a quick tutorial.

Spread the creamy cheese of your choice (goat cheese, mascarpone or even plain cream cheese will do) all over the wrap. I used a low-carb wrap but you can use your favorite one.

Spread in the middle a very thin layer of jam or preserve. Just a little dab in the middle should do it so the sandwich doesn't become too sweet.

Top the jam with prosciutto and then pile on the arugula, about 1/2-3/4 cup per 1 large wrap.

Evenly sprinkle the sliced figs (about 3 sliced figs per wrap) on top. Then roll, slice and enjoy! Great for snacking and perfect as appetizers, too!

Doesn't this look delicious? Believe me, it's so gooooooood!!!!

Fig, Prosciutto and Arugula Sandwich Wrap

Fig, prosciutto, arugula and creamy mascarpone all join in to create a wonderful taste that you will love in this sandwich wrap. Everyone who has tasted this sandwich always asks for the recipe as they are instantly intrigued with its sweet, salty, creamy and delicious flavor combo.

Ingredients

  • 4 large Sandwich Wraps (I used low-carb)
  • 8 oz tub of Mascarpone or Goat Cheese (won't need all of it)
  • Cherry Preserve (or your favorite jam or Fig spread)
  • 4 slices of Prosciutto, divided
  • 2-3 cups fresh Arugula
  • 12 fresh Figs, cleaned and sliced and divided into 4

Instructions

  1. Place the wrap in a plate and spread about 2-3 tablespoons cheese (or to taste) all over (up to the edges). Spread a thin layer of jam on the middle of the wrap. Don't overdo this so as not to mask the taste of the other ingredients.
  2. Top the jam with 1 slice of prosciutto then place about 1/2-3/4 cup fresh Arugula. Sprinkle the sliced figs all over.
  3. Roll, slice and serve! Enjoy these delicious wraps!
