Homemade Sweet Tangy Barbecue Sauce

Homemade Sweet Tangy Barbecue Sauce

I grew up in a small island in the Philippines called Marinduque. Our island is a little far away from Manila or other big cities. If you wish to go to the city in another province you have to ride the ferry or a big passenger outrigger boat. The nearest one would take you at least 3-4 hours to reach and that is by sea and certainly not for the faint-hearted and those prone to sea sickness. We're a little isolated that way. While we have small grocery stores in the various towns, our beautiful island has yet to be graced by a modern and big supermarket that you normally see in the big city.

This is why we often had to rely on local produce and make certain food and dishes from scratch. That includes making your own concoction of a condiment. If you know any Filipino, you'd notice that he or she is never without a dipping sauce of some sort when eating. Food is almost never complete without some accompanying sauce. My mom often made her own sauce to go with whatever dish she is preparing.

This particular barbecue sauce was actually inspired by my Mom's sauce that she makes for her fish. After the fish is fried, she drizzles her homemade sauce all over it and then tops it with other vegetables which may or may not be cooked with the sauce. When I made some slow cooker pulled pork the other day I remembered that particular sauce and thought that that may go well with the pork sliders I was making.  Hubby purchased some coleslaw for lunch and we assembled the sandwich - pulled pork at the bottom, some coleslaw on top and then a little bit of our homemade sweet-tangy barbecue sauce. Oh wow, it was really delicious! Am glad we thought of this as pretty soon we'll have some young folks over in our house and this will be our main menu.

Sweet tangy homemade barbecue sauce that's perfect for basting, topping or simply dipping into. It adds a lot of flavor to your meat dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 3/4 cup Ketchup
  • 1/2 cup brown Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Honey
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire or Soy Sauce or to taste

Instructions

  1. Place all the ingredients in a non-reactive sauce pan. Stir.
  2. Bring to a boil and then simmer on low uncovered for 5-10 minutes or until slightly thickened.
  3. When cool pour the sauce into a jar and cover or squeeze bottle. Keeps in the refrigerator for up to 1 week (perhaps even more because of the vinegar in it).
  4. You can certainly tweak the  flavor to your taste. Use this as a guideline to make your own homemade barbecue sauce. Enjoy!

    1. I actually cut it down by 1/4 already Laura as my mom's recipe called for 1 cup as her measurement was 1:1 ratio but it can certainly be adjusted to suit someone's taste preference. Thanks for stopping by.

  7. I have been looking for this recipe, although I will cut back on the vinegar as the kids tend to like sweet more than tangy. Thank you for the inspiration.

    1. Feel free to adjust to your taste preference. I used a Filipino vinegar here so it's a bit milder and I like a sharp contrast between sweet and tang. I appreciate you stopping by and hope you like it. Thanks. :)
